Hoodia: Botanical information
The potential of Hoodia gordonii as an aid for weight
control has produced frenetic interest in this
previously, little-known plant. Along with any strong,
new interest in healthcare, public confusion often
prevails. Hoodia gordonii has been incorrectly referred
to as a cactus. While it has a prickly green appearance,
like a cactus, it belongs to a group of plants called
succulents of the Asclepiadaceae family. There are at
least 2,000 species of the Asclepiadaceae group of
plants, and half of these species are succulents.
Succulent plants imply that the body of the plant is
full of juice and has fleshy tissues that will conserve
water. Breaking the skin of the plant Hoodia results in
the flow of juices and presentation of "plant flesh".
This material has been considered to be very nutritious
by the San bushmen of South Africa . Although a variety
of species of Hoodia are found in the desert regions of
South Africa ( Kalahari , Botswana , and Namibia ), not
all varieties of Hoodia have been used as appetite
suppressants. The principal, prized plant of the bushmen
is Hoodia gordonii.
